Blog Contents

This blog will primarily be technical with a software engineering and IT slant centered on NGS Sequencing, Bioinformatics, Cloud Computing, and Data Warehouses.

Why the name?

It is hard to pin down a good definition for informatics, but at least for me it means everything about information and analyzing it. From my work in bioinformatics I have worked on everything from designing and implementing a laboratory information system to optimizing a next generation sequencing pipeline to run on Amazon Web Services. That work has required me to be involved with everything from software engineering to sysadmin work to statistics. Despite my specialty being in bioinformatics much of the work I do has applications in any type of analysis. I end up working with a wide variety of technology. I feel "The Informatitist" does a pretty good job describing what I do and who this blog would apply to.

Another reason for the name and probably what helped me come up with the name though it didn't occur to me at the time is the sci-fi book "The Algebraist" by Ian M. Banks who is one of my favorite authors.

About Me

I am a bioinformatician. My current work is around optimizing and implementing bioinformatics pipelines on compute clusters both locally and on cloud resources.

Much of my work is more on the software engineering side rather than the analysis side of informatics. Though there will be content for both. My hope is this blog will be all encompassing and have information useful for scientists, sysadmins, software engineers, and those still in school that are all involved working together to design and implement solutions to informatics problems or want to learn how to get involved.
